Biography
Darren Charles Waller is an American football tight end for the Miami Dolphins of the NFL. Born on September 13, 1992, in Landover, Maryland, Waller played college football at Georgia Tech as a wide receiver before being selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. His early career was derailed by substance abuse issues, resulting in multiple suspensions, including a year-long ban in 2017. After overdosing on drugs in August 2017, Waller spent 34 days in a rehabilitation facility, marking a turning point in his life and career. He was reinstated in 2018 and signed by the Oakland Raiders, where he transformed his career. Waller had a breakout season in 2019, recording 90 receptions for 1,145 yards. In 2020, he set career highs with 107 receptions, 1,196 yards, and 9 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. In 2022, he signed a three-year, $51 million contract extension with the Raiders, becoming the highest-paid tight end in the NFL. Waller was traded to the New York Giants in 2023 but struggled with injuries. In June 2024, he announced his retirement from football at age 31, only to return a year later when he was traded to the Miami Dolphins in July 2025. Off the field, Waller founded the Darren Waller Foundation to help youth avoid and overcome addiction. He is also known for his music career and for being the great-grandson of jazz pianist Fats Waller.
