Islam Makhachev is a Russian professional mixed martial artist and former sambo competitor. Born on October 27, 1991, in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, he is a longtime training partner of former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Makhachev's fighting style is built on a foundation of sambo and wrestling, with methodical ground control and dangerous submissions. After winning the UFC Lightweight Championship in 2022, he successfully defended it four times, setting a divisional record, before vacating it in 2025 to pursue the Welterweight title.
