Biography

Marcus Osmond Smart is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Wizards of the NBA. Born on March 6, 1994, in Flower Mound, Texas, Smart played college basketball for Oklahoma State University, where he was named the Big 12 Player of the Year as a freshman. He was selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, where he spent the first nine seasons of his career. Smart initially came off the bench before becoming a regular starter in 2018 and the team's starting point guard in 2021. Known for his defensive prowess, Smart was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, becoming only the sixth guard in NBA history to win the award. He has earned a reputation as a hustle player, often diving for loose balls and taking charges, which earned him the nickname "the Cobra." Smart helped lead the Celtics to the NBA Finals in 2022, though they ultimately lost to the Golden State Warriors. In 2023, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies, and in 2025, he was traded to the Washington Wizards. Throughout his career, Smart has been known for his physicality, versatility, and ability to guard multiple positions despite his size.
