Biography
Nicholas John Bosa (born October 23, 1997) is an American professional football defensive end for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). Widely regarded as one of the league's top pass rushers, Bosa has established himself as an elite defensive player through his exceptional strength, technique, and game-changing impact, though injuries have occasionally sidelined him.
Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Bosa grew up in a prominent football family. His father, John Bosa, was a first-round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in 1987, and his older brother, Joey Bosa, is a standout defensive end for the Los Angeles Chargers. This family legacy provided Bosa with early exposure to the game and high-level training resources, fostering a competitive edge from youth leagues onward.
At St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Bosa emerged as a dominant force, starting for four years and earning first-team all-state honors multiple times. As a five-star recruit, he was ranked among the top prospects in the 2016 class by major scouting services, committing to Ohio State University where he followed in his brother's footsteps.
Bosa's college tenure at Ohio State (2016-2018) showcased his elite potential. As a true freshman in 2016, he played in all 13 games, recording 29 tackles (7 for loss) and 5 sacks, helping the Buckeyes reach the College Football Playoff. In 2017, as a starter, he earned unanimous first-team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, and first-team All-American honors, with a remarkable 28% pass rush win rate. The 2018 season started strong, but core muscle surgery and an ACL tear in the third game sidelined him; he withdrew to prepare for the NFL draft, forgoing his senior year.
Drafted 2nd overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2019, Bosa immediately made an impact, winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and helping the 49ers reach Super Bowl LIV. Despite an ACL tear in 2020 that ended his second season, he rebounded strongly, leading the league in sacks (18.5) in 2022 and earning NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. In 2023, he signed a record-breaking five-year, $170 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.
Bosa's career statistics through 2025 (85 games) include 278 tackles, 64.5 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries, and 2 interceptions. His elite pass-rushing ability, combined with his technical proficiency and leverage, has made him one of the most feared defensive players in the league. However, his 2025 season was cut short by a second ACL tear in Week 3, raising concerns about his long-term durability.
Off the field, Bosa's public image has been marked by controversy. He has openly supported former President Donald Trump, including wearing a MAGA hat during a post-game interview in 2024, which resulted in an NFL fine. In July 2025, he joined President Trump's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. These political expressions have divided opinions, with supporters praising his candor and critics questioning inclusivity in sports, particularly in the politically progressive San Francisco Bay Area.
Despite the controversies, Bosa's on-field production remains elite. He has appeared in two Super Bowls (LIV and LVIII) and has been selected to five Pro Bowls. His combination of power, technique, and football IQ makes him a cornerstone of the 49ers' defense, though his injury history and political stance continue to shape his complex legacy in the NFL.
