Born in Switzerland to Croatian parents, he represented Switzerland at youth level before choosing Croatia at senior level. Throughout his career, he has played for Basel, Schalke 04, Sevilla (in two spells), Barcelona, and Al-Shabab. He is known for his technical skills, vision, playmaking abilities, and versatility in midfield positions. With Barcelona, he won numerous trophies including the treble in his first season. For Croatia, he was part of the team that reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup final and earned 106 caps before retiring from international duty in September 2020.
